Fern & Flora Diamond Stair Step Card

This card design was originally shared by my aunt & her friend!  She asked if I knew how to make it, and I said, no, but I'd sure like to figure it out! Turns out this one has been around for a while!  It's called a Diamond Stair Step Card!  This one was created by Kari Patton. I just love the use of the DSP!! So grab your favorite DSP and give it a try!

Measurements:

  • Secret Sea: 4 1/4" x 10 1/2", 3 pcs @ 3" x 3",
  • Moonlit Flora DSP (N): 2 pcs @ 1 1/8" x 4 1/8", 2 pcs @ 1 5/8" x 4 1/8", 2 pcs @ 2 1/8" x 4 1/8" (Golden Glow print); 3 pcs @ 2 7/8" square (Secret Sea print with Golden Glow and White flowers) - note these will need to be cut "on point" so the pattern is going the correct direction! Fussy cut one sprig of Golden Glow flowers
  • Basic White: 2 7/8" square (back panel), scrap (label)
  • Mossy Meadow: scraps (ferns)
  • Old Olive: scraps (ferns)
To Make this Card:

  • Score the Secret Sea base @ 1 1/4" - 2 1/2" - 4 1/4" - 6" - 8 1/4".
  • Accordion fold, starting at the 1 1/4" score line with a "mountain" fold. Crease well.
  • Adhere the Golden Glow print DSP pieces to the corresponding panels.
  • Next, adhere the "fern" DSP pieces to the Secret Sea squares. Note: to determine which areas of the DSP I wanted to use, I drew around the Secret Sea squares with a pencil to check it out, knowing I'd also be trimming them down.  Select a "wow" piece for the front!
  • Now, to add the "diamonds" (squares) to the "steps".
  • Choose the "diamond" you would like for the back.  Place adhesive on approximately the bottom 1" of the diamond and adhere to the 5th panel, with the 6th panel folded down. Center it on the panel.  It should also measure 5 1/2" tall, when the card base is folded up, or, about 1 1/4" from score line.
  • Next, adhere the middle "diamond" to the 3rd panel the same way, centering it over the back "diamond", so about 1/2" showing above the edges, and roughly 5/8" above the score line.
  • Repeat for your chosen front panel, again, about 1/2" showing above the edges of the middle "diamond".  Mine extended just a tad below the bottom, cut edge, I just snipped it off! So, the base is done!
  • Lastly adhere the White piece to the back of the "diamond". Oh, I stamped a sentiment, first, in Golden Glow ink.
  • Now to cut the embellishments!
  • Die cut a large fern from Mossy Meadow as well as 2 "medium" ferns. Next, die cut from Old Olive cardstock, 2 curled fern fronds, and one "leafy" fern.  You should have 6 "ferns" total.
  • Adhere one medium Mossy Meadow fern and one Old Olive curled fern to the back panel (see pix)
  • On the other side of the back panel, add largest fern and "leafy" fern.
  • To the center panel, add the remaining 2 "ferns".
  • For the front, stamp the "label" in Secret Sea ink, with the sentiment in Golden Glow.  Die cut with corresponding label die.  Add to front of card with Dimensionals. Also, and the fussy cut "sprig".
  • Finish with 2026-2028 InColor Dots.
